Fontana

The last race of the SERC series wound to a close at Fontana Village this past weekend. The trails were pretty slick on saturday, although the short track course was decently dry (enough anyways). Spectating at the Short Track race later on saturday evening proved to be an interesting event. Team Junior Byron Rice raced the Amateur short track race and finished 6th amongst a field of competitors a good deal older than him. Although I warmed up on the short track course, I didn’t feel like suffering through the twelve minutes of maximum energy output required to race Short Track.
After a night of rain, the course was not in wonderful shape for the morning races. The race officials decided to cut both me and Byron’s categories to one lap instead of the planned two, which was a welcome change for both of us. Race coordinator David Berger said it well when he warned riders, “this is the most challenging course we run on this circuit, and these are about the worst conditions we’ve ever seen.”
One the race started, we had to worry more about the mud and the mountain than other riders. Byron and I were both able to win first in our own categories despite the rough conditions.
After a weekend of mud, rain, and mountain bikes, I am looking forward to a (hopeful) nice weekend of racing at Dark Mountain on the 23rd.

Catawba Riverfront Classic

On Sunday, June 7, 2009, the Inland/Back to Dirt development team ran a great race at the Catawba Riverfront Classic in Charlotte. Four junior racers came and raced, while Charlie Storm raced in the Expert race. I raced Junior 15-16 and placed first, while Junior teammate Byron Rice raced in the 13-14 class and also finished first. Byron and I hung together for the majority of the race, passing all of the Clydesdale riders and a majority of the Beginner men. The course was a little bit slick, but dried out as the race went on and it was possible to pick up a little more speed towards the end of the race. Overall the race went well, no injuries or major mechanicals made for a nice race day.  -Cameron Muir

I would also like to take this time to express how proud I am of all of our Back To Dirt/Inland Construction junior racers.  They are great ambassadors for our sport as well as our sponsors.  I am also very thankful for the response from the cycling community to our junior racers.  They are doing an awesome job extending the reach of the Back to Dirt/Inland Construction brand.  It is an honor for me to be involved with such fine young men and women as well as the Back to Dirt/Inland Construction team.  - Thanks, Howard Rhyne

MTB Clinic

Thanks to all that came out for the clinic.  Charlie work with the attendees on stretching, cornering, starts, and visualization techniques.  I had some really good video that would make zen master Charlie a youtube sensation but I somehow hit pause instead of record.

Back To Dirt Development picks up multiple wins at Uwharrie!

Southern Classic Series Race at Uwharrie

On Sunday the 29th of March, Sandhills Cycling hosted the second of the Southern Classic Series at Uwharrie. I raced along with several other juniors from the Back to Dirt Development Team. Byron Rice (BTD) finished first in the Junior Men 13-14 class, Mulloy Manning finished first in the Junior Women 18- class, and I finished first in the Junior Men 15-18 class. The Back to Dirt team had three victories during the junior race, but during the Cat 2 race, Howard Rhyne took a fall and injured his shoulder, putting him out for the next few races. Overall the day went pretty well, with team Pro Charlie Storm finishing second in the Pro Men 19-29 class as well.
